The Nelson Bay Blues trace their history back to the beginning of Rugby League in the Newcastle region.

The Newcastle Rugby League is one of the oldest rugby league competitions in Australia, founded in 1910. A Newcastle team competed in the inaugural New South Wales Rugby League premiership of 1908 but withdrew after the 1909 season to form the local competition.

The four original teams were Central Newcastle (Blue & White), Northern Suburbs (Light & Dark Blue vertical stripes), South Newcastle (Red & White) and Western Suburbs (Red & Green).

The Port Stephens side joined forces with foundation Newcastle Rugby League club North Newcastle in 1989 and played the following decade as North Nelson Bay.

They changed to the Northern Blues in 2000, moved their playing base from Anna Bay to Tomaree Oval and won the 2005 premiership under that banner.Another name change occured in 2006 when the Club played as the Nelson Bay Blues.

This year, 2010, the Nelson Bay Blues will celebrate their 100th season in style and have taken the first step by changing their name back to the Northern Blues to link with their proud history.
